When I make a photograph, long before the shutter is pressed, a set of criteria is resolved. The technical aspects of light and shadow, focus control, and composition are essential. But that's become almost innate, much like driving a car. Now I look to see that my images contains elements of the four kinds of photography in which I work: fine-art photography, photojournalism, fashion photography and classic portraiture.

My passion is to design real-life photographs that transcend the ordinary snapshot and become a work of art. To do so, the picture must tell a real-life story. I want my images to have a sense of movement and an insight into the lives of the people I photograph. Whether I'm making a portrait for a judge or documenting an exuberant dance at a wedding, I look for the kind of subtle body language belongs to that person alone. I've learned when to provide direction and when to become as invisible as possible. One of my greatest challenges as a people photographer, is to transition between photojournalist and confidant. Too much direction, can spoil spontaneity.

Working on photographs after capture, in my light-lab, is essential. But I'm just a bit of an old-school purist when it comes to modern enhancement and retouching techniques. I don't go overboard with softy-mushy filters. I strive for details in my shadows and highlights. People who choose me to be their photographer expect artistry seasoned with tradition.
